Nephrology

Founded in 1971, the Nephrology Department at Hôtel-Dieu de France is among the pioneering centers in Lebanon. With long-standing expertise and physicians trained in leading French university hospitals, it provides excellent care that combines technological innovation with a human-centered approach for patients suffering from acute or chronic kidney diseases.

Today, a multidisciplinary team of five specialist physicians delivers a comprehensive and diverse range of services:

• Reference Hemodialysis Center: A center caring for more than 140 patients, where extracorporeal dialysis is complemented by comprehensive follow-up (nutritional, psychological, and vascular), in close collaboration with the radiology and vascular surgery departments.
• Nephrology Intensive Care: Advanced expertise in the management of acute kidney failure across the hospital’s intensive care units.
• Peritoneal Dialysis: An alternative to hemodialysis, either manual or automated, enabling patients to perform dialysis at home, with safe catheter placement performed by our visceral surgeons.
• Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis): Advanced protocols for the treatment of various systemic, renal, or neurological conditions.
• Kidney Transplant Program: A leading reference center in the country, recognized for its high number of annual transplants. We prioritize laparoscopic donor nephrectomy to ensure faster donor recovery and manage high immunological risk cases (including desensitization for sensitized patients, particularly those awaiting a second or even third transplant) in close collaboration with the laboratory for HLA typing and anti-HLA antibody detection.
• Precision Diagnosis (Kidney Biopsy): Kidney biopsies performed under CT guidance, with immediate histopathological analysis within HDF, ensuring fast and reliable diagnosis.
• Center of Academic and Research Excellence: Integrated within the Faculty of Medicine at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ), the Nephrology Department at Hôtel-Dieu de France is a leading training center for future specialists in Lebanon and the region.
