Palliative Care

Palliative care provides guidance, care, and support to patients and their loved ones, addressing all aspects of suffering: physical, psychological, social, and spiritual.

The palliative care service consists of the palliative care unit (PCU) and the mobile palliative care team.

The PCU, currently staffed by two physicians and a multidisciplinary team (nurses, nursing assistants, a psychologist, a chaplain, physical therapists, and dietitians), was established in 2016 at the HDF and is considered a pioneer in palliative care in Lebanon.

The PCU has seven private rooms that allow patients to create a home-like environment and feel comfortable throughout their hospital stay.

The mobile team consists of a physician, a nurse, and a psychologist, and its goal is to alleviate the suffering of patients admitted to any department of the hospital who require palliative care.

The palliative care team works in collaboration with physicians from other specialties.

Through its academic mission, the PCU is dedicated to:

  • Training interns and residents from the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at Saint Joseph University, as well as nursing interns, whether Lebanese or international.
  • To providing high-level continuing education for healthcare professionals.
  • To research and the advancement of care.
  • The HDF also offers access to palliative care at home.
