The radiation oncology department at the Hotel-Dieu de France Hospital (HDF) of the University of St Joseph (HDF-USJ) dates back to the year 1925. The department operated under the directorship of Professor Paul Ponthus from 1946 till 1976. During that period, the department was a reference center for cancer treatment for the entire middle-east region. After a closing period during the civil war, the department was renovated and equipped with modern radiation therapy machines. Clinical activity was resumed in September 2001 under the directorship of Professor Elie Nasr. Since then, over 7500 patients have received quality radiation therapy indicated by numerous and continuous letters of appreciation from patients and their families. Today, the department of radiation oncology at HDF is treating more than 700 new cases per year. It has the highest number of graduating radiation oncology residents in the country. It participates actively in local and regional cancer conferences, and regularly publishes on retrospective and prospective clinical studies.
The department’s commitment to quality and technology was renewed in 2013 through 2014. A major clinical expansion and acquisition of state-of-the-art radiation therapy systems have now been completed and this includes: Two Varian TrueBeam 2.0 systems for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery, one perfect pitch 6 DoF robotic couch for precision radiosurgery, a BrainLab planning and treatment system for intra-cranial radiosurgery, Eclipse-11 Treatment Planning system, ARIA-11 information management system, and a Varian Gamma-Med Plus high dose rate brachytherapy system. The treatment modalities currently offered are:
Volumetric Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy (RapidArc®) with IGRT
Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) with Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)
Intracranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
Intensity-Modulated Radiosurgery (IMRS)
Image Guided Radiosurgery (IGRS)
Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiosurgery (SABR)
Respiratory gating for motion management
Total Body Irradiation
Conventional 3D conformal radiotherapy
